“Gnosticism” is a modern scholarly umbrella term for diverse ancient groups and writings. There was no single universal Gnostic church, creed, or system.

Many texts associated with Gnostic traditions emphasize saving or liberating knowledge, awakening, and a deeper understanding of human identity and the divine.
The material world
Some Gnostic systems describe the material world in strongly negative terms, while others are more nuanced. It is better to discuss individual texts or traditions than to assume every group believed the same thing.
How to study responsibly
Use primary texts, reputable scholarship, and historical context. Avoid collapsing ancient Gnostic traditions into modern spirituality or using “Gnostic” as a vague label for any idea about awakening.
